22:1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.

22:2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

22:3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering,

he set out for the place God had told him about.

22:4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

22:5 He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."

22:6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,

22:7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

22:8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.

22:9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

22:10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

22:11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.

22:12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."

22:13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

22:14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."

22:15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time

22:16 and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

22:17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,

22:18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."

22:19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

12:1 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men

in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.

12:2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,

12:3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it,

and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and

even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

12:4 "Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of

his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.

Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one

       who had come to him."

12:5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives,

the man who did this deserves to die!

12:6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity."

12:7 Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

12:8 I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you

the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you

       even more.

12:9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes?

You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own.

You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

12:10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me

and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'

12:11 "This is what the LORD says: 'Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity

upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close

to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.

12:12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.'"

12:13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD

has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.

12:14 But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt,

the son born to you will die."

12:15 After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to

         David, and he became ill.

2:22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you

by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him,

        as you yourselves know.

2:23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you,

with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

2:24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death,

because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

2:25 David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand,

       I will not be shaken.

2:26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope,

2:27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

2:28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'

2:29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried,

and his tomb is here to this day.

2:30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that

he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

2:31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,

that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.

2:32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

2:33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit

and has poured out what you now see and hear.

2:34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord:

       "Sit at my right hand

2:35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

2:36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified,

       both Lord and Christ."

2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter

and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for

the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2:39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--

for all whom the Lord our God will call."

2:40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them,

"Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."

2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added

       to their number that day.

5:1 Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing.

5:2 Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.

5:3 In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

5:4 You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell.

5:5 The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.

5:6 You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors.

5:7 But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow down toward your holy temple.

5:8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies--make straight your way before me.

5:9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit.

5:10 Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.

5:11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

5:12 For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.
