2. NIV

1 The LORD then said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.

2 Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate,

3 and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.

4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made."

5 And Noah did all that the LORD commanded him.

6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth.

7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.

8 Pairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground,

9 male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah.

10 And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.

12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.

14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings.

15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.

16 The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.

17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth.

18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.

19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered.

20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet.

21 Every living thing that moved on the earth perished--birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.

22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.

23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

10 When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: "I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defense.

11 You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.

12 My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city.

13 And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.

14 However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that agrees with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,

15 and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.

16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.

17 "After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings.

18 I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance.

19 But there are some Jews from the province of Asia, who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me.

20 Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin--

21 unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: 'It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.'"

22 Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. "When Lysias the commander comes," he said, "I will decide your case."

23 He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs.

24 Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.

25 As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you."

26 At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.

27 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews, he left Paul in prison.

8 "But you, O Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,

9 I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.

10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

11 "All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.

12 Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all.

13 For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

14 Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I myself will help you," declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

15 "See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.

16 You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up, and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the LORD and glory in the Holy One of Israel.

17 "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

18 I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.

19 I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together,

20 so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

1:1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

1:2 He had seven sons and three daughters,

1:3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

1:4 His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

1:5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.

1:6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

1:7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

1:9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.

1:10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

1:11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

1:12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

1:13 One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

1:14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

1:15 and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

1:19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship

1:21 and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."

1:22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

1:1

The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:

1:2

"Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it,

because its wickedness has come up before me."

1:3

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish.

He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.

After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.

1:4

Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea,

and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.

1:5

All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god.

And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

1:6

The captain went to him and said,

"How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god!

Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

1:7

Then the sailors said to each other,

"Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity."

They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

1:8

So they asked him,

"Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us?

What do you do? Where do you come from?

What is your country? From what people are you?"

1:9

He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD,

the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."

1:10

This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?"

(They knew he was running away from the LORD,

because he had already told them so.)

1:11

The sea was getting rougher and rougher.

So they asked him,

"What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"

1:12

"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied,

"and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that

this great storm has come upon you."

1:13

Instead, the men did their best to row back to land.

But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.

1:14

Then they cried to the LORD,

"O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man's life.

Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you,

O LORD, have done as you pleased."

1:15

Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard,

and the raging sea grew calm.

1:16

At this the men greatly feared the LORD,

and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.

1:17

But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah,

and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

11:1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

11:2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

11:3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly."

They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

11:4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,

so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole

        earth."

11:5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

11:6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this,

then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

11:7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

11:8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

11:9 That is why it was called Babel-because there the LORD confused the language of the whole

world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

18:16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked

along with them to see them on their way.

18:17 Then the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?

18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be

         blessed through him.

18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him

to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring

about for Abraham what he has promised him."

18:20 Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin

         so grievous

18:21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached

me. If not, I will know."

18:22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before

         the LORD.

18:23 Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the

         wicked?

18:24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not

spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?

18:25 Far be it from you to do such a thing-to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating

the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth

         do right?"

18:26 The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole

         place for their sake."

18:27 Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord,

though I am nothing but dust and ashes,

18:28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city

because of five people?" "If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it."

18:29 Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?" He said, "For the sake of

forty, I will not do it."

18:30 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be

found there?" He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

18:31 Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty

can be found there?" He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it."

18:32 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only

ten can be found there?" He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

18:33 When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home

5:29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

5:30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

5:31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.

5:32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.

5:33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.

5:34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.

5:35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

5:36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.

5:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,

5:38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.

5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,

5:40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

5:41 "I do not accept praise from men,

5:42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

5:43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

5:44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

5:45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.

5:46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

5:47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
