2. NIV

2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

2:2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world

and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in

those who are disobedient.

2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,

gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires

and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

2:5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--

it is by grace you have been saved.

2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him

in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

2:7 in order that in the coming ages he might show

the incomparable riches of his grace,

expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--

and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,

which God prepared in advance for us to do.

2:11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth

and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision"

(that done in the body by the hands of men)--

2:12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ,

excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise,

without hope and without God in the world.

2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near

through the blood of Christ.

2:14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one

and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,

2:15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations.

His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,

2:16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,

by which he put to death their hostility.

2:17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those

who were near.

2:18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

2:19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens,

but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,

2:20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.

2:21 In him the whole building is joined together and

rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.

2:22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling

in which God lives by his Spirit.

8:14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God
are sons of God.

8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you
a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of
sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit
that we are God's children.

8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs
of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in
his sufferings in order that we may also share in his
glory.

8:18 I consider that our present sufferings are not
worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed
in us.

8:19 The creation waits in eager expectation
for the sons of God to be revealed.

8:20 For the creation was subjected to frustration,
not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who
subjected it, in hope

8:21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its
bondage to decay and brought into the glorious
freedom of the children of God.

8:22 We know that the whole creation has been
groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to
the present time.

8:23 Not only so, but we ourselves,
who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly
as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons,
the redemption of our bodies.

8:24 For in this hope we were saved.
But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes
for what he already has?

8:25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have,
we wait for it patiently.

8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our
weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans
that words cannot express.

8:27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind
of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes
for the saints in accordance with God's will.

8:28 And we know that in all things God works for
the good of those who love him, who have been called
according to his purpose.

8:29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be
conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be
the firstborn among many brothers.

8:30 And those he predestined, he also called;
those he called, he also justified; those he justified,
he also glorified.

8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to this?
If God is for us, who can be against us?

8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him
up for us all--how will he not also, along with him,
graciously give us all things?

8:33 Who will bring any charge against those whom
God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

8:34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus,
who died--more than that, who was raised to life--
is at the right hand of God and is also interceding
for us.

4:13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,
he left him until an opportune time.

4:14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and news about him spread through
       the whole countryside.

4:15 He taught in their synagogues,
       and everyone praised him.

4:16 He went to Nazareth,
where he had been brought up,
and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,
as was his custom. And he stood up to read.

4:17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him.
Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach
        good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for
        the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
        to release the oppressed,

4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

4:20 Then he rolled up the scroll,
gave it back to the attendant and sat down.
The eyes of everyone in the synagogue
       were fastened on him,

4:21 and he began by saying to them,
"Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

4:22 All spoke well of him and were amazed
at the gracious words that came from his lips.
"Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.

4:23 Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote
       this proverb to me:
'Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown
what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'"

4:24 "I tell you the truth," he continued,
"no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

4:25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel
in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and
a half years and there was a severe famine
       throughout the land.

4:26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them,
but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

4:27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy
in the time of Elisha the prophet,
yet not one of them was cleansed--
       only Naaman the Syrian."

4:28 All the people in the synagogue were furious
       when they heard this.

4:29 They got up, drove him out of the town,
and took him to the brow of the hill on which
the town was built, in order to
       throw him down the cliff.

4:30 But he walked right through the crowd
       and went on his way.

1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder,
a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will
share in the glory to be revealed:

2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care,
serving as overseers--not because you must,
but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;
not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

3 not lording it over those entrusted to you,
but being examples to the flock.

4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears,
you will receive the crown of glory that will
never fade away.

5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to
those who are older.
All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward
one another, because, "God opposes the proud but
gives grace to the humble."

6 Humble yourselves, therefore,
under God's mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time.

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because
he cares for you.

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy
the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.

9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because
you know that your brothers throughout
the world are undergoing the same
kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to
his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered
a little while, will himself restore you and make you
strong, firm and steadfast.

11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

2. NIV

4:13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

4:14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.

4:15 He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.

4:17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,

4:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

4:20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him,

4:21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

4:22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.

4:23 Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'"

4:24 "I tell you the truth," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

4:25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.

4:26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

4:27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian."

4:28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.

4:29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff.

4:30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

2. NIV

5:1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's

sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:

5:2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;

not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

5:3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory

that will never fade away.

5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older.

All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand,

that he may lift you up in due time.

5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion

looking for someone to devour.

5:9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers

throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

5:10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,

after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong,

firm and steadfast.

5:11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

2. NIV

17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James,

and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun,

and his clothes became as white as the light.

17:3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

17:4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish,

I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."

17:5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them,

and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love;

with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

17:7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."

17:8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them,

"Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

17:10 The disciples asked him,

"Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"

17:11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.

17:12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him,

but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to

suffer at their hands."

17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,
especially the gift of prophecy.

2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak
to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him;
he utters mysteries with his spirit.

3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their
strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who
prophesies edifies the church.

5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,
but I would rather have you prophesy.
He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in
tongues, unless he interprets,
so that the church may be edified.

6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues,
what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some
revelation or knowledge or prophecy or
word of instruction?

7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds,
such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know
what tune is being played unless there is a distinction
in the notes?

8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call,
who will get ready for battle?

9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words
with your tongue, how will anyone know
what you are saying?
You will just be speaking into the air.

10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages
in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.

11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone
is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker,
and he is a foreigner to me.

12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts,
try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue
should pray that he may interpret what he says.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays,
but my mind is unfruitful.

15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit,
but I will also pray with my mind;
I will sing with my spirit,
but I will also sing with my mind.

16 If you are praising God with your spirit,
how can one who finds himself among those
who do not understand say "Amen"
to your thanksgiving,
since he does not know what you are saying?

17 You may be giving thanks well enough,
but the other man is not edified.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than
all of you.

19 But in the church I would rather speak
five intelligible words to instruct others than
ten thousand words in a tongue.
