13:15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak."

13:16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: "Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me!

13:17 The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt, with mighty power he led them out of that country,

13:18 he endured their conduct for about forty years in the desert,

13:19 he overthrew seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance.

13:20 All this took about 450 years. "After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.

13:21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years.

13:22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'

13:23 "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.

13:24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.

13:25 As John was completing his work, he said: 'Who do you think I am? I am not that one. No, but he is coming after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.'

13:26 "Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.

13:27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

13:28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

13:29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

13:30 But God raised him from the dead,

13:31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.

13:32 "We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers

13:33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: "'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'

13:34 The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: "'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.'

13:35 So it is stated elsewhere: "'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'

20:12 O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is

attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

20:13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before

         the LORD.

20:14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah,

the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in

         the assembly.

20:15 He said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what

the LORD says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army.

For the battle is not yours, but God's.

20:16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and

you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.

20:17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and

          see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid;

do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'"

20:18 Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem

fell down in worship before the LORD.

20:19 Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD,

the God of Israel, with very loud voice.

20:20 Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood

and said, "Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God

and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful."

20:21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise

him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

"Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever."

20:22 As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and

Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.

20:23 The men of Ammon and Moab rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and

annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy

         one another.

20:24 When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward

the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped.

20:25 So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them

a great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value--more than they could

take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it.

20:26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they praised the LORD.

This is why it is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.

17:12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance

17:13 and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"

17:14 When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went,

         they were cleansed.

17:15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.

17:16 He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him--and he was a Samaritan.

17:17 Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?

17:18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.

12:2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and

       led astray to mute idols.

12:3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed,"

and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

12:5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

12:6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

12:7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

12:8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of

knowledge by means of the same Spirit,

12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between

spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another

         the interpretation of tongues.

12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one,

         just as he determines.

12:12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many,

they form one body. So it is with Christ.

12:1 The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men

in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.

12:2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,

12:3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it,

and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and

even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

12:4 "Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of

his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.

Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one

       who had come to him."

12:5 David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives,

the man who did this deserves to die!

12:6 He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity."

12:7 Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

12:8 I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you

the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you

       even more.

12:9 Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes?

You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own.

You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

12:10 Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me

and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'

12:11 "This is what the LORD says: 'Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity

upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close

to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.

12:12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.'"

12:13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD

has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.

12:14 But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt,

the son born to you will die."

12:15 After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to

         David, and he became ill.

2:1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,

2:2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child,

she hid him for three months.

2:3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it

with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along

      the bank of the Nile.

2:4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

2:5 Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking

along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it.

2:6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.

"This is one of the Hebrew babies," she said.

2:7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to

      nurse the baby for you?"

2:8 "Yes, go," she answered. And the girl went and got the baby's mother.

2:9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.

" So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

2:10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son.

She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water."

9:11 When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through

the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of

        this creation.

9:12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;
but he entered

the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

9:13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those

who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.

9:14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered

himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,

so that we may serve the living God!

9:15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called

may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died

as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

9:16 In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it,

9:17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect

while the one who made it is living.

9:18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.

9:19 When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people,

he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop,

and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.

9:20 He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep."

9:21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle

and everything used in its ceremonies.

9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,

and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

9:23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified

with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

9:24 For Christ did not enter a man made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one;

he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence.

9:25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again,

the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.

9:26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.

But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin

       by the sacrifice of himself.

9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

9:28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people;

and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those

       who are waiting for him.

2:22 "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you

by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him,

        as you yourselves know.

2:23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you,

with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

2:24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death,

because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

2:25 David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand,

       I will not be shaken.

2:26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope,

2:27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

2:28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'

2:29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried,

and his tomb is here to this day.

2:30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that

he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

2:31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,

that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.

2:32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

2:33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit

and has poured out what you now see and hear.

2:34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord:

       "Sit at my right hand

2:35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

2:36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified,

       both Lord and Christ."

2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter

and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for

the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2:39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--

for all whom the Lord our God will call."

2:40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them,

"Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."

2:41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added

       to their number that day.

8:4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.

8:5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there.

8:6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid

close attention to what he said.

8:7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed.

8:8 So there was great joy in that city.

8:9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed

all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,

8:10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed,

"This man is the divine power known as the Great Power."

8:11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic.

8:12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God

and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

8:13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere,

astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

8:14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God,

they sent Peter and John to them.

8:15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,

8:16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them;

they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

8:17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

8:18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands,

       he offered them money

8:19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands

       may receive the Holy Spirit."

8:20 Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought

you could buy the gift of God with money!

8:21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.

8:22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord.

Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.

8:23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin."

8:24 Then Simon answered,

"Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me."

8:25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord,

Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
