15:11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons.

15:12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.

15:13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

15:14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.

15:15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

15:16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

15:17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!

15:18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.'

15:20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

15:21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

15:22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

15:23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.

15:24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.

11:13 I am talking to you Gentiles. In as much as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry

11:14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.

11:15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

11:16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,

11:18 do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but

the root supports you.

11:19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in."

11:20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.

11:21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.

11:23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

11:24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature

were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

40:18 To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to?

40:19 As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.

40:20 A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple.

40:21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

40:22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

40:23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

40:24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

40:25 "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One.

40:26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"?

40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

40:31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. ISA

91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

91:2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

91:3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.

91:4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

91:5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,

91:6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

91:7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.

91:8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

91:9 If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the LORD, who is my refuge--

91:10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.

91:11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

91:12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

91:13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

91:14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

91:15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

91:16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,

9:2 and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

9:3 He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.

9:4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.

9:5 If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."

9:6 So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,

9:8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.

9:9 But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.

9:10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,

9:11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

9:12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."

9:13 He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."

9:14 (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."

9:15 The disciples did so, and everybody sat down.

9:16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

9:17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

5:24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

5:25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.

5:27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

5:28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice

5:29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

5:30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

5:31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.

5:32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.

5:33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.

5:34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.

5:35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

5:36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.

5:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,

5:38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.

5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,

5:40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

5:41 "I do not accept praise from men,

5:42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

5:43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

5:44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

5:45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.

5:46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

5:47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"

11:1 Now the LORD had said to Moses, "I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely.

11:2 Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold."

11:3 (The LORD made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh's officials and by the people.)

11:4 So Moses said, "This is what the LORD says: 'About midnight I will go throughout Egypt.

11:5 Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well.

11:6 There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt--worse than there has ever been or ever will be again.

11:7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal.' Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

11:8 All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, 'Go, you and all the people who follow you!' After that I will leave." Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.

11:9 The LORD had said to Moses, "Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you--so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt."

11:10 Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.

18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

18:2 He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.

18:3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'

18:4 "For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men,

18:5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'"

18:6 And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says.

18:7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

18:8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

18:9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

18:10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

18:11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector.

18:12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

18:13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

18:14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.

12:2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

12:3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

12:5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

12:6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

12:7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

12:8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,

12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,

12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

12:12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.

12:13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

12:14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many.

12:15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.

12:16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.

12:17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?

12:18 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

12:19 If they were all one part, where would the body be?

12:20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21:5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,

21:6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."

21:7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"

21:8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.

21:9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away."

21:10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

21:12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.

21:13 This will result in your being witnesses to them.

21:14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.

21:15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

21:16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.

21:17 All men will hate you because of me.

21:18 But not a hair of your head will perish.

21:19 By standing firm you will gain life.

21:20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.

21:21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.

21:22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.

21:23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.

21:24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

21:25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.

21:26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

21:27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

21:28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
